Report From Business Agent Kevin H. Pohl For July/August 2010.
Franklin's Earthmoving Inc.:
During contract negotiations the company made the statement that they will be shutting the doors at Franklins at the end of the year if business does not increase. It looks as the company picked up work in Laguna, New Mexico. They are looking for dump truck and water truck drivers for this project which is estimated to last up to a year.
BUILDING TRADES:
We have a lot of projects on the radar as possible Project Labor Agreements. Columbus, New Mexico will be the first sight in the country to build an Algae Based Bio-fuel site. The Sapphire Energy Group will receive $104.5 million in federal funding to build a commercial scale, algae-based bio-fuel operation. The U.S. Department of Energy awarded $50 million in stimulus money for the project, and the U.S. Department of Agricultural approved a $54.5 million loan guarantee under the Bio-refinery Assistance Program, which was authorized in the 2008 Farm Bill. Near Clovis, New Mexico there is a proposed substation site. This project will provide a unique opportunity to connect all three synchronous North American interconnections, bringing potential benefits to electric consumers across all three regions. Again, this is the first in the country, and the name of this project is the Tres Amiga’s.

Also, Los Alamos National Laboratory officials unveiled ambitious plans for construction projects, including a new nuclear facility whose cost could push $4 billion and create 1,000 construction jobs over the next 10 years. The project would include an upgrade in security infrastructure for the access-controlled roads, a major renovation for the labs radioactive liquid waste treatment facility, other waste remediation, and improved caps of crushed rocks, soil, and clays (at least 8 feet thick) for disposal areas filled with radioactive waste and hazardous chemicals. All three of these projects will bring good union jobs in the construction industry if we are successful in our goals.
