SEPTEMBER 2008 ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWSLETTER

Report From Mike Butler:  Business Agent

OMI:  Congratulations on recent retirement of brother Ruben Gonzales.  Again looks like there may be a new classification coming.  In the mean time I need any and all information the membership can bring forward so we can negotiate any new positions.

UPS Statewide – Business Agent Sister Marie Wilson has decided to turn in her retirement papers as of 8/29/2008.  Sister Wilson was a breath of fresh air in this industry and will surely be missed.  I wish her the best on a well deserved retirement.

There continues to be issues on methods on the road and in the buildings.  If the company intent is to issue discipline on you have a steward or union member as witness.  It’s your right and the company’s obligation to do so.

Again the grievance procedure has been overhauled.  The members and the company have an obligation to follow Article 28 and the steps in place.  I have copies of the up-dated procedure in the office, it’s the same that came with your ballot for the contract that you voted on.  When the new contract is available to the Local it will be available to the members.  In the mean time use the old contract with the language changes that came with your ballot.

Please be safe in the work place Peak is right around the corner.

Report From Kevin H. Pohl:  Business Agent

Creamland:  By this time all of you know about the arbitrator’s decision on the attendance policy. Although we had a good argument on the change, the arbitrator makes the final and binding decision that both the company and the union must live with.  We were hoping to have the new contract books printed by the end of September, but both the company and the union are still in the process of reviewing the language to insure the accuracy and the intent.

Support Contract Services:  As you all know Support Contract Services is a UPS Truck Load Carrier. Our Teamster Brother Anthony Lovato was nominated by Johnny Johnson Manager SCS in Albuquerque for driver of the quarter and was awarded that title.  A portion of his published article reads, “Sara Lee Distribution Manager, Enrique Ramoz to have nothing but great things to say about Anthony.  Anthony’s willingness to contribute on a daily bases has increased the efficiency of the Transportation Department and the distribution section.  Anthony is a certified trainer and participates in monthly safety team meetings. In the one year he has driven for the operation, Anthony’s peers and customers all respect and look to him for honesty, integrity and responsibility. He has well over 2.5 million miles of accident-free driving and trains new employees with dedication and professionalism”.  Anthony has been a Teamster for over 16 years, he started with Sara Lee Transportation since then they have closed and SCS has taken over. Great job Anthony we are proud to have you as a TEAMSTER.

SYSCO:  Contract proposal forms have been mailed out on August 29, 2008.  These need to be returned to the Local or your Steward by September 22, 2008.  The next meeting is scheduled to be held on Sunday, October 26, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at the Union Hall.  It is very important that you attend.

POLITICAL: I am very grateful for the Teamsters endorsement, it means a lot to me since I come from a union family.  I understand the difficulties and obstacles of the working men and women of New Mexico.  As District Attorney I know that it is imperative that we as a community keep people working; crime decreases when people have good paying jobs.  Unions are a very important part of that equation.

I will have an open door, transparency and accountably in the District Attorney’s office when I am elected.  Your members will know their District Attorney is competent and fair.
Thank you again,

Lisa Torraco
