The Company History
Pat Salmon and Sons, Inc. (locally known as Elbar Inc.) was founded in 1946 as a U.S. Mail carrier. It operated one straight truck on a route from Harrison, Arkansas to Little Rock, Arkansas. Every night, Pat Salmon himself would drive the truck, getting the mail to Little Rock on time. Since then the company has not lost its focus, direction or forgotten its origin. Today the Salmon family of companies operates over 100 postal contracts with operations in 26 states.
As it was the beginning over sixty years ago, providing high quality service to the post office is still the ultimate and premier focus of the company.
In 1997 Pat Salmon & Sons Received the Coveted and Prestigious Quality Supplier Award for 1997 by the United States Postal Service. They are the only highway transportation company to ever win this award.
In 2008 they won the "Eagle Spirit Award". This award is given to United States Postal Service Highway Contractors that have provided exemplary service over the last year.
They currently have 63 employees covered by the Teamsters.
The Teamsters Local 492 Campaign
In late 2009, Teamsters Local 492 Organizer Moises Ortega, with the help of Kevin Pohl, started a campaign to organize the workers at Elbar Inc. (DBA Pat Salmon and Sons, Inc.) because of numerous requests from the employees to organize their workplace and their wish to become Teamsters. On February 26th, 2010, over 67% voted yes to Teamster representation. Teamsters Local 492 would like to take this time to thank everyone who helped on this campaign which includes Walter Drennan as his leadership was invaluable in this victory and also Roy Freitag.
There are 63 drivers in this bargaining unit and we are currently gathering bargaining surveys in order to begin negotiations with the company to secure a good first contract. Seniority, safety, Health & Welfare and Pension seem to be the primary issues for this group.
