ALEC Is Bad For Workers

Two weeks ago, we told you about UPS’s affiliation with the American Legislative Exchange Council, or ALEC. ALEC is an organization that sets up meetings for companies, like UPS and FedEx, to meet with state legislators to develop and promote anti-worker, anti-union legislation that directly hurts working families. We asked you to TAKE ACTION to tell UPS how you feel about their involvement with ALEC, and many of you did. UPS heard us, but as of now, UPS is continuing to support ALEC.

Why is ALEC so bad for working families? Because it pushes model legislation like the:

Right to Work Act, designed to weaken collective bargaining power;
Workers’ Compensation as Exclusive Remedy Resolution, which would take away an employee’s right to sue his or her employer for on-the-job injuries;
Resolution on Autonomous Vehicle Legislation and Regulation, aimed at discouraging states from banning or regulating self-driving vehicles; and
Resolution on the Misapplication of Employee Classification Laws, written with the intent to stop state labor agencies from enforcing employment anti-misclassification regulations.

Now, UPS is sponsoring ALEC’s annual meeting at a luxury resort in San Diego starting tomorrow. In 2014 and previous years, UPS has paid $25,000 to attend. Why is UPS paying tens of thousands of dollars to support legislation that hurts its workforce, and runs contrary to UPS’s own business model?

Teamsters Local 492 Wins Historic Grievance Against Sysco for Members

4/16/2024- It is with great pleasure that I can report to all our members, that Teamsters Local 492 has won a hard-fought grievance for our Sysco brothers and sisters! On April 03, 2020, a grievance was filed to enforce the forty-hour language in our contract. This grievance was filed during the Walter Maestas administration, in the early stages of Covid-19.
